Bosses! Jess is a writing and marketing firecracker!

This episode is jam-packed full of valuable, actionable information.

Jess basically walks us through, step-by-step, how she grew her newsletter to 12k subscribers in 4 months and then made $1,300 in pre-order sales.

You don’t want to miss it. Listen here –

Here are just a few of the things we touched on:

  • How personal tragedy motivated Jess to finish her first novel, and finish it well
  • Why she started as a panster and transitioned to a plotter. Resource for outlining: Take Off Your Pants by Libbie Hawker

  • The marketing steps she took to launch her debut novel with over $1,300 in preorder sales
  • How she used Facebook Ads and Twitter to grow her mailing list
  • What to use as a newsletter opt-in when you don’t have any books complete
  • The subject line that got her double the open click-through rate on her welcome email
  • How she used giveaways to grow her email list to over 12,000 people

  • What Jess puts in her welcome email to her list that keeps people subscribed and looking forward to following emails.
  • How to present your book to your audience and invite them to consider purchasing without feeling desperate and sleezy
  • The importance of investing in a good book cover and professional editing
  • Her best advice for authors who want to get the same results she did

My results are typical. What I did is attainable by anyone. I’m a 22-year old college kid working full-time and going to school full-time and trying to write full-time. I saved for years to be able to afford the editing and cover costs… But I did it. – J.E. Schmidt

About the Author

J.E. Schmidt is 22 years old and lives in Louisville, KY. She’s been writing since she was 15 years old, starting with fanfiction and moving to original fiction once she started college. Ember was the first book she took seriously and she began writing it 4 years ago. About 1/3 through the book though, in the summer of 2015, her mom tragically passed away. She ended up losing her full-ride academic scholarship, and had to drop out of college for a while. She also stopped writing.

She picked up her manuscript again last spring and decided she was going to finish it. And she did, completing the first draft in October. Ember just released on February 27th, and here she is now at either the end or the beginning of her journey.
