From a soul-draining administrative job to bestselling author on Amazon
When I was growing up, my parents told me I should get a job that was responsible and reasonable, because having a career doing what I loved wasn’t a thing–especially if it was artistic.
So I limited myself to their expectations, working at jobs that were “secure” and “respectable.”
Those jobs were terrible.
I felt like my soul was dying every day that I went into the office.
A few years ago, I started a Facebook group for writers and it took off. In just a couple months, over 10k creative people had joined the group.
They were just like me—looking for a way to get away from the corporate bullshit and build a life doing something they loved… writing.
But also like me, they didn’t know what to do to turn their dreams into reality.
So I did something—I started the Author Like a Boss podcast. I interviewed dozens of incredibly successful indie authors (like Shannon Mayer and Chris Fox).
All the successful authors said the same thing—with the right mindset, tools, and motivation, writers could turn their hobby into a profession and make a living doing what they love.
I was SO down for that. So after analyzing the data—both from the 6-figure authors and the people in the FB group—I created a course to help writers achieve their dreams.
(Note: While I love books, and writing has always been an interest of mine… writing isn’t my passion. Helping creative women is my passion, which is where this story gets interesting.)
I spent a couple years making different iterations of the course, improving it until it was the best I could offer.
But writers weren’t signing up for my course.
(Note: A few people did work with me, and I will ALWAYS be grateful to those who took a chance early on.)
At one point, I wondered if I should give up. I had quit my job to make this work, but it wasn’t working. My husband has always been supportive, but it was a becoming a strain because we were broke. Like, all-my-shirts-were-$3-from-Walmart broke.
So I made a bold decision…
“Fine. I’ll do it myself.”
I knew my course was good. I knew it would help writers reach their author goals.
I just needed to prove it.
So I gave myself six months and I did my own course.
In January 2020, I published my first short story romance. By April 2020, I was earning $3,000 per month.
Yes, I followed my course. And guess what? It worked!
And it’s still working.
These days, my books regularly show up in the Top 500 of the Kindle store.
More importantly, the process is repeatable. And not just for short romance. I’ve seen it work with multiple genres and word-counts.
I’m still implementing the things I’ve learned from successful authors; only now I’m using more advanced strategies to take my author career to the next level.
But what I’m most excited about is spending time on my real passion—empowering women to make money doing what they love… Writing!
If you’d like more details about how I started making real money as an author, download this FREE ebook. It’s a compilation of the emails I sent while it was happening.
